TEMPO & FREQUENCY
The Table of Time exercise I work a lot with has a delightful harmonic correspondence.
Playing quater notes (1's) and eighth notes (2's) together has the ratio of 1:2, as does the harmonic interval of an octave. Hear it here.
Playing eighth notes (2's) and eighth note triplets (3's) together has the ratio of 2:3, as does the harmonic interval of a perfect 5th. Hear it here.
Playing eighth note triplets (3's) and sixteenth notes (4's) has the ratio of 3:4, as does the harmonic interval of a perfect 4th. Hear it here.
Playing sixteen notes (4's) and quintuplets (5's) has the ratio of 4:5, as does the harmonic interval of a major 3rd (non-tempered). Hear it here..
Playing quintuplets (5's) and sixteenth note triplets (6's) has the ratio of 5:6, as does the harmonic interval of minor 3rd (non-tempered too I guess). Hear it here.
And when we play this monster polyrhythm of 1:2:3:4:5:6, we get an untempered major triad harmony. Brace yourself!.
I discuss this at length with Nick Atkinson here... our interview hasn't been uploaded to the RNZ website it seems.. will try and track it down and put it up soon.
